Shalwar kameez happens to be the national dress of Pakistan, a country situated in the south East Asia. It comprises of a shirt called a kameez or kurta which is knee length usually and a pair of loose trousers tied at the waist and are snug around the ankles. You will get to see people wearing shalwar kameez everywhere in Pakistan. The most commonly witnessed dress to be worn by Pakistanis; shalwar kameez has come a long a way evolving over a period of time. Where once shalwar was something very specific as the definition aforementioned, it has a broader meaning now. Now we get to see chooridaars, Patialas, Haram pants, flappers, Dhaka pyjamas, and Q lots acting as shalwars. Whether it’s a normal day or an occasion, shalwar kameez is the preferred dress.
On festive events and occasions such as weddings, eids, basant, religious nights and so on, salwar kameez is worn by one and all. You can refer to them as festive wear shalwar kameez. These shalwar kameez are more stylish than others and have embroidery done upon them. Also made out of expensive material such as georgette, chiffon, velvet, jamawaar, they come in bright and exuberant colours. Now depending on the occasion, the embroidery done of the dress varies. You can either get heavy designing done all over the dress or just light work done along the hem, the cuffs and the neckline. This embroidery is done by the help of silver or golden shiny threads, semi-precious stones, imitation diamonds, and pearls.
These are very expensive dresses as a lot labour goes into preparing them. Although once you don them, they make you look so beautiful and perfect for any festive occasion. Festive shalwar kameez is not just worn in Pakistan but even in the neighbouring countries such as India or Bangladesh and as far as Canada and America too. However, the style and the trends in fashion differ a lot form each other. As the culture and traditions change with the change in geographical locations, the demands of local people change as well. For instance in India, long shirts are still not worn whereas in Pakistan long shirts are very much in; but the main theme of festive shalwar kameez remains the same and that is exuberant embroidery and designing done on the dress to make it glitter, shine and stand out. It should look festive and one should also feel festive.
